WE'RE IN BIG TROUBLE, BLACKBOARD BEAR

A welcome return for one of picturebookdom's more inspired creations. While Anthony is asleep, Blackboard Bear steps soundlessly (and wordlessly) out of the blackboard and creeps out the window--to reappear (before Anthony awakens) at dawn. So the watching child knows, very early on, that the ""giant monster"" who during the night ""stole all the goldfish"" out of one child's pond, ""took a big jar of my mom's honey"" from another child's kitchen, and ""took all the blueberries"" from the garden of a third, can be none but Blackboard Bear; and when (""My gosh!"") his footprints match the monsters', he and Anthony are indeed in ""big trouble."" But after Anthony reassures the mutely contrite Bear of his devotion, they're still in trouble--because of course Blackboard Bear has eaten his loot. How to make restitution? Well, Blackboard Bear takes some chalk. . . and so what if the child who lost six goldfish gets eleven back, ""Maybe one had babies"" (says Anthony). Not a wasted move or an extra word, and pure pleasure.
