by Martin Gardner ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 1, 1973
Martin Gardner, who has already done an Annotated snark (1962) for adults as well as his better known Annotated Alice, here reproduces Lewis Carroll's rhyme with the original Holiday illustrations, leaving the right hand pages free for the ""Snarkteasers"" he links up to the verse in various ways and answers at the back of the book. Some of the puzzles are just old elephant jokes in snarks' clothing or even older riddles (what weighs more, a pound of snark feathers or a pound of snark whiskers?), some are just excuses for notes on the text (Q: who spoke the words the Bellman is quoting? A: Marc Antony in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar), few are worth the trouble of interrupting Carroll's text and turning to the back of the book. Much as we enjoy the Gardner-Carroll combination we have to admit that this comes in a very mimsy second to The Annotated Snark.
