ONCE A SPY

An uneven Napoleonic tale that’s equal parts adventure and romance.

Our man in Waterloo proposes a marriage of convenience and ends up with much more.

Suzanne Duval may be the Comtesse de Chambron but nevertheless, she’s making ends meet with piecework in a boardinghouse when Col. Simon Duval comes to find her. Simon, her late husband’s second cousin, has returned from his service as a spy in the Napoleonic wars and has sought her out to propose marriage. Suzanne and Simon met years ago and had a “teasing friendship,” so it’s no surprise that they take quick interest in one another. But Suzanne, whom readers of the Rogues Redeemed series (Once a Scoundrel, 2018, etc.) will recognize from previous volumes, is traumatized by the abuse she suffered in a harem for many years. Simon, who understands the "death of desire," proposes a marriage solely of companionship, and Suzanne accepts. As they begin their adventure-filled marriage together, traveling the Continent in the brief lull of the Napoleonic wars, Simon’s lust begins to reignite, and Suzanne is unsure whether she will be able to reciprocate his passion. But just as she begins to become more comfortable with Simon, Napoleon comes back from his exile, and soon the newlyweds are en route to a little town called Waterloo. As ever, Putney’s characters find themselves in mortal peril more than once as their love slowly blooms. Unfortunately, this developing romance is often undermined by several subplots, copious historical detail, and cameos from earlier entries in the series, and it’s burdened with a lot of unnecessary exposition. Readers who will be uncomfortable reading about a heroine struggling with PTSD–like symptoms related to sexual assault may need to skip this one. Suzanne does find her way toward healing and enjoying sex, and although this happens more quickly than some might expect, Simon’s tenderness with her makes it more believable. Fans of the series will likely enjoy this new entry, but it will be hit or miss for other historical romance readers.

An uneven Napoleonic tale that’s equal parts adventure and romance.

SIRI, WHO AM I?

A strong debut that’s fun and funny, perfect for lovers of modern romantic comedies and light mysteries.

A young woman with amnesia must use social media to figure out who she is in this quirky mystery.

Mia wakes up in an LA hospital dressed in Prada and a tiara with a massive head wound and no idea who she is. The trauma of the injury has caused amnesia, and the doctor says time in familiar surroundings will help her remember. Unfortunately, the only reason she even knows her own name is because of her phone. Having retained a wide knowledge of pop culture and Twitter muscle memory but no clue about herself, she takes to her social media profiles to discover who she is. An Instagram photo of a house with the hashtag #homesweethome leads her to think she might be on the right track. Upon entering the house, however, she meets Max, a grad student who says he's housesitting for a French billionaire, not Mia. With Max at her side, Mia attempts to figure out what exactly is going on before she runs out of money or the true owner of the house comes back. Tschida’s debut shines in its prose, maintaining a light, chatty tone as Mia narrates her struggles, complete with footnotes when appropriate. Despite not knowing who she is, Mia has a strong personality that will endear her to the reader, who will worry for her as the plot twists and turns. The dynamic between Mia and Max is playful and fun, keeping the mood light even when things start getting darker. Tschida’s a deft hand at characterization and dialogue; characters jump off the page and interact in interesting ways. The mystery isn’t easily solved, and the journey to the solution is clever and enjoyable.

A strong debut that’s fun and funny, perfect for lovers of modern romantic comedies and light mysteries.

THE DECEPTION

A romantic suspense that skillfully balances both elements.

A successful businesswoman hires a smooth-talking bounty hunter to find a lead on her sister’s murder.

Kate Gallagher was the only one available to identify her younger sister Chrissy’s body after she was found dead, having run away from home two years earlier. Since Chrissy succumbed to drugs and turned to sex work to survive, her murder isn't taken seriously by the local homicide department. Kate is filled with grief and regret at not having been there for her sister, and she’s determined to find her killer as a kind of penance. Jason Maddox is the charming man Kate almost hooked up with at a local bar. He also happens to be on the payroll of the most successful investigation company in Dallas. He’s all too eager to help Kate out and spend more time getting to know the blonde he danced with at the Sagebrush Saloon. At first, Kate and Jason vow to keep things professional until the case is solved; there’s obvious attraction that they’re willing to pursue at a later date. But the increasing sense of danger mixed with Kate and Jason’s close proximity proves to be too heady of a combination. The tension never lets up as the pair visit seedy bars and interrogate unsavory characters. With a steamy romance and undeniably hot chemistry, the main characters are well matched. They’re both driven, slightly stubborn, and enjoy the adrenaline rush of catching criminals. Martin (The Conspiracy, 2019, etc.) doesn’t skimp on graphic, violent details as Chrissy’s murder leads her couple to something much bigger: human trafficking. Though not for the faint of heart given its weighty material, this is an un-put-down-able page-turner that’s sure to satisfy fans of romance and thrillers alike.

A romantic suspense that skillfully balances both elements.
