Spoofing law 'n' order and hitting putty close to home--'ceptin' it happens in Muffton, a motley of everywhere judging from the polyglotted mangling of English that might make you chafe if you weren't laughing so dern hard. An anonymous ""Finlay Farmer"" is the cause of the pranks here that bring out the best, worst, or at least most, in the older generation--especially in gallumping Sheriff Stonehead who studies his trade by correspondence course. And in apoplectic Mayor Whipsnade who ends up fancying Thoreau after reading the Walden he finds in a phone booth (""ex libris Finlay Farmer""). ""All teenagers under 21"" are curfewed as the Sheriff crusades with a posse and deduces that the culprit's a smart one (it's them ""highbrow magazines, Mad""). Only one girl knows that Finlay's a figment of Sam Winkle's imagination, and he's the boy who wins the Muff Day Pioneer Award for good citizenship! Sometimes bigger than its britches satire-wise (and longer too), this'll make whippersnappers chuckle and old fogies buckle in praise of Jerome Beatty's foolery.
