A stalk by Martineau of the Granchester (England) C.I.D. takes him through the underworld, its haunts and habituees, and his unremitting determination to find Don Sterling is needled by his own domestic discontent. The theft of some race track winnings, and the necessary murder which goes with it, patterns the crime for which Sterling had once been sentenced and his recent jailbreak indicates his more than likely guilt in the new case which Martineau pursues and proves..... The surly criminal and sordid crime here offer few attractions- but are handled with real realism.
