For teens looking for love in all the wrong places, this social media fable is dramatized with love triangles, revenge, and...
Teenage girls play out a revenge drama online only to discover that there’s no hiding one’s true identity.
The two key characters, Annalise and Noelle, go to the same high school, but they aren’t friends. The shallow girls tell a shallow story through first-person chapter swaps. Noelle, at the behest of her grudge-bearing BFF, Eva, creates a bogus virtual romance to woo beautiful Annalise away from Noelle’s love interest. The guy bait, Declan, is a home-schooled relative of Eva who isn’t on social media and knows nothing of this charade. Disillusioned by guys who ogle her plus-sized boobs, Annalise is seduced by online conversations with Noelle/Declan, who seems ideal: clever, sensitive, and like-minded. Then Annalise decides to meet Declan in person, discovers the deceit, and proceeds to turn the tables on the vendetta. As plans go haywire, the teens begin to realize the darkness of their deeds, and both girls, stripped of anonymity, find their consciences. This tale seeks to authentically depict the current digital age while making a plea for finding depth and accountability in relationships. A story of revenge is often a crowd pleaser, and here this morality tale succeeds, but the intended audience will probably be too busy surfing the Web to read it.
For teens looking for love in all the wrong places, this social media fable is dramatized with love triangles, revenge, and rock-’n’-roll. (Fiction. 13-17)Pub Date: Jan. 1, 2016

Queer, fluffy fun.
Senior year brings an entire list of changes to Jay’s life.
Jay, a gay 17-year-old, experiences a dramatic shift when his mother’s promotion to grocery store district manager transports their family from a small, not-very-diverse town in Eastern Washington to Seattle for his last year in high school. Jay will have to leave his best friend, Lu, but their friendship can survive the distance, right? It also means the chance to cross off items on Jay’s Gay Agenda, a list that ranges from finally meeting another gay boy (after being the only one who is out at his school) to, hopefully, going all the way. Things look up when Jay is taken under the wing of exuberant, genderqueer Max, a new Seattle classmate who helps him make moves toward sexy (and fun) Tony and sexy (and endearing) Albert. The story will amuse readers who are looking for a light read, although the characters at times read more like sitcom versions of teenagers than the real things. While the overall tone is more slapstick and humorous, a subplot concerning orphaned Lu’s financial problems is handled with sensitivity. The coronavirus is mentioned in a context indicating that the story is set in the near post-pandemic future, after quarantines have ended. Most main characters are implied White; Albert is Chinese American, and secondary characters in Seattle reflect the diversity of the city.

Comfortingly familiar page-turning suspense.
A Tahoe blizzard is the setting of Parrack’s debut.
Seventeen-year-old Lottie, a White English girl who’s been repeatedly let down by her flighty Mum, isn’t happy about spending the night alone in a remote cabin with her quiet, nature-loving new stepsister, 15-year-old Black American Jade, while their parents go on their honeymoon. They’ve only met three times before and haven’t exactly clicked. Then again, it’s only one night. How bad could it be? Then the power goes out and the stranger arrives. Alex, described generically as Asian, is tall and charming and claims to have lost his way—he’s just a boy walking his dog. However, his story is full of holes, and before long Lottie suspects he’s hiding something. Just as she confronts him, a fire breaks out in the cabin, and Lottie, Jade, and Alex are forced out into the cold and snow with only each other to rely on; one night on their own turns into a dayslong struggle for survival. It’s unfortunate that encounters with a bear, a mountain lion, and an avalanche are nothing compared to the human threat stalking them through the wild white wilderness. Lottie’s first-person narration is generic, but the action is fast-paced, with just enough romantic tension between Lottie and Alex to keep it interesting, while the tentative nature of Lottie and Jade’s new sister relationship fades quickly as they learn to rely on and appreciate each other.
Comfortingly familiar page-turning suspense. (Thriller. 13-17)Pub Date: Sept. 6, 2022
