Noting that Realism has remained dominant in the American theatre as against European expression, Michael Benedikt has selected the plays in this anthology of American works to indicate ""the wide variety of styles and approaches that lie outside of Naturalism."" Both pre-and post- naturalist styles are included, from Archaic, Medieval Elizabethan to Expressionism, Surrealism, the Theatre Piece, the Happening. The playwrights represented are: Wilder, Saroyan, Lardner, Stevens, Cummings, Goodman, Lowell, Koch, Drexler, Richardson, Edson, Krauss, Stein, Whitman (Robert), Schneemann, Kaprow and Frazier.
