THE HOUSE OF SHADE

Sequel to Attack in the Desert, in which Brice, British Intelligence Officer, patterned after Lawrence of Arabia, in today's conflict, rescued young flier Pullford from Italian hands, and kept secret his own identity as Pullford Senior, long since given up as dead by all but the boy's mother. In this sequel young Pullford is again ""missing"", having balled out over Tripoli. And Brice's chief, knowing the truth about him, uses it as a lever to persuade Brice to undertake the rescue of an interned French admiral, badly needed by the Free French. The desert setup, the pattern of the story, suggest P. C. of early days. But Michael Home, excellent at building up background and preparation, does not sustain his climax in quite the traditional manner, and the story runs thin at the end, the finale seems too easy, the escape too fortuitous.
