ISLAND OF BALI

This, it seems to us, is definitive word on Bali. The author, not a scientist, has none the less given a flavor of authentic scientific presentation on ethnological, social, economic and cultural counts, which recalls a comparable book, Life in a Haitian Valley. A grand job, thorough and readable, painting the people of Bali against their background, community life, religion, customs, arts. He dreads the influx of tourists and already sees its effect on the crafts. The book is illustrated with extraordinary work by his wife. A beautiful gift book -- a book for armchair travel -- a book for ethnologists.
