When John Parker dissolved his business partnership, it almost killed him. Rather, Meredith Walker, his former partner, almost killed him with an attempted lethal double cross. But Parker was the one who went to prison for allegedly shooting Meredith’s accomplice. Three years later, John, a levelheaded, likable lead, is married and working in bustling downtown Atlanta as the head of analytics for an international company. His life is back to normal, and he’s managed to avoid trouble—until Meredith shows up at John’s suburban home. She demands half of the proceeds for the sale of their startup company’s software, but Parker doesn’t have the money. An unexpected gunfight ensues in the yard among Parker, Meredith, and others. After the smoke clears, someone has taken a bullet, and another one of Meredith’s accomplices later turns up dead. Now Parker’s wife, who was armed that night, may face jail time. To add to Parker’s woes, he and his colleague Sabrina Mitchell uncover fraud at their workplace. If they can prove it, they may be able to save hundreds of jobs. Nemeth masterfully weaves the two mysteries together. The murder plot is particularly strong; the deceptively simple bullet-riddled event turns out to have been quite complex. Parker, for example, thoughtfully contemplates everything from shell casings and fingerprints to the distinctive sounds of different caliber guns. These considerations spark lively dialogue, which keeps the pages turning along with abundant plot turns. While the protagonist is memorable, supporting characters, like Sabrina and Paula, also shine. Intelligent, headstrong Sabrina may be even more compassionate about saving those jobs than Parker, and Paula’s alcoholism compounds her paranoid belief that her husband is cheating on her.

No, it’s not for everyone—but if you want to read a supercharged meta-pastiche like this, this is exactly the one to read.
The 50th annual Australian Mystery Writers’ Festival, taking place aboard a long-distance train bound from Darwin to Adelaide, is punctuated by snarky dialogue, murder, and a zillion inventive misdirections.
“Why [am] I here?” wonders Ernest Cunningham, whose struggles to write his second book are interrupted by his invitation as a headliner at the festival-on-wheels, which will turn into the setting of his new book. Thriller writer S.F. Majors, former forensic pathologist Alan Royce, and artsy one-named Wolfgang are all much better known than he is. So is Lisa Fulton, even though she hasn’t published a novel in 20 years. And of course Henry McTavish, the bestselling creator of Detective Morbund, is in a different league altogether. After making a series of disingenuous promises about future developments—since he’s narrating the tale in the first person, for instance, he will definitely survive, and the killer’s name will be mentioned exactly 106 more times going forward—Ernest gets down to business with a combination of zeal and obliviousness. True to his word, he chronicles more than one murder, reveals a multitude of other felonies from burglary to rape, links the current mystery to a much older case, and sets the stage for a series of escalating reveals, one of them interrupted so many times that the self-anointed detective complains, “There’s not normally this much heckling in a denouement.” Stevenson rivals his golden age models in his willingness to sprinkle every scene with clever clues, outdoes them in setting up a dazzling series of false conclusions, and leaves them in the dust for modern-day fans with an appetite for self-reflexiveness.

It starts with a food fight and ends with murder.
Carly Hale’s dream of opening a restaurant specializing in everything grilled cheese has finally come to fruition. When her part-time helper, Grant Robinson, quits his job at Sub-a-Dub-Sub, his irritable ex-boss, Ferris Menard, naturally blames Carly. Both owners have entered the Halloween festival food contest, and tensions run even higher after Menard accuses Carly of trying to ruin his business and somebody paints a skull on her car. The announcement of the winner is held up by the discovery that the ballot box has been stuffed. The next morning Menard is found dead. Though there’s a steak knife in his chest, it turns out that he was dead before he was stabbed. Chief Holloway, who’s familiar with Carly’s sleuthing skills, warns her off, but the framing of her boyfriend, Ari Mitchell, for the murder guarantees that she’ll ignore the chief’s advice. Perhaps unwisely, she hires Menard’s daughter, Holly, who needs a job while the sub shop is closed. Carly learns a lot more about Menard’s background as a lifelong resident, including the high school bullying and the divorce that made him plenty of enemies. One of her best customers is a retired teacher who keeps leaving her unusual poems of encouragement. Could her knowledge solve the case?
