by Millicent E. Selsam ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 6, 1972
Adding bits of nature lore to the photographic guessing game introduced by Tana Hoban, Selsam invites children to Look Again again. What seem like pebbles in a full-page photo turn out on the next page to be lentil seeds, accompanied by the information that ""seeds can grow, but pebbles cannot,"" and similarly a group of apparent ferns is revealed as ""the designs frost made on a windowpane. The water vapor in the air of a room hit the cold window and formed crystals of ice."" The owls' eyes, however, don't really look that much like two fried eggs nor the budding potatoes like puppets, and at the end Selsam abandons her device altogether to give us several views of pelicans (the ""baby dinosaurs"" of the title). Hoban's camera eye is more startlingly ingenious and the educational value of Selsam's text is minimal, but that dewy spider web and vertical porcupine quill are sure to fool you and it's all set forth most attractively.
