MISS SUZY'S BIRTHDAY

The only crack in the contentment of Miss Suzy squirrel, who has added a nursery to her cozy house in the oak tree, is her awareness that the four orphaned squirrels she adopted in Miss Suzy's Easter Surprise (KR, 1972) will some day grow up and leave her. But when the neighbors plan a surprise party for her birthday, and Stevie, the youngest, gives the surprise away, she is happy in the realization that if he's too little to keep a secret he'll be with her for a long time -- ""and the others aren't much bigger."" There's a little side interest involving the choice of a birthday gift (as ""Miss Suzy likes things plain,"" her friends settle on individually wrapped acorns and a basket to put them in), but again, it is Arnold label who makes a success of an otherwise unmemorable occasion.
