As substantive as cotton candy.
A sweet woodland fete may fizzle if the hosts cannot find their younger sister.
The three Whiskers sisters—Maya, who has paper-white skin, pink hair, and antlers; Mia, a blue-gray cat with a cheery yellow gaze; and May, the youngest, also paper-white but with orange tresses and wide pink eyes—live in a pastoral wood, where they await the return of their grandfather, the Guardian of the Forest. Only a toddler, May’s kept in the dark when an exciting letter arrives. When her frustrations mount, the precocious toddler stows away with a mail-delivering owl. As Maya and Mia merrily plan their surprise party, they soon discover May’s absence; will they be able to find her in time for their big event? Originally published in France, this bubble-gum graphic import is heavy on cute but unfortunately light on narrative substance. The plotting is little more than pablum, building up to an extremely predictable and saccharine denouement. The worldbuilding is somewhat intriguing, and as this is the first in a series, perhaps subsequent volumes will offer a bit more than fuzzy forest creatures and pink pulchritude. However, the preciously envisioned characters depicted with perky, manga-inspired stylizations may garner favor with some.

Models attention to detail and deductive reasoning in a fun beach setting, complete with interesting facts.
Beachcombers and shell seekers, gather ’round and meet Shelby and Watts, Planetary Investigators.
When Fred the hermit crab can’t find a new, larger shell to move into, he seeks out the “brilliant brains” of Shelby and Watts. Shelby, a fox, is the detective in the duo, and Watts, a badger, loves facts, adding simple fun ones—about hermit crabs, tides, tide-pool dwellers, how shells are used, etc.—throughout the story. Watts also loves to catalog clues in his notebook. In fact, the first mystery that Shelby solves is that of Watts’ lost notebook. Young readers can watch Shelby investigate, solve, and explain her deductive process, all while learning to carefully examine all the details in each graphic panel. Once the missing shells are found, it’s “time for the hermit crab shuffle,” in which the members of a colony of hermit crabs all line up and trade up to larger homes. Final pages include “Earth-Saving Tips from Shelby & Watts,” such as taking pictures of shells instead of collecting them, eating seafood from sustainable sources, and cleaning up the beach. The seven chapters are of varying length, but with several one-panel pages and many pages with low word count, the book is shorter than it appears, which should be a confidence boost for young readers. A zippy graphic-novel series opener featuring two comically bumbling reptile detectives.
As agents of SUIT (Special Undercover Investigation Team) with customized VESTs (Very Exciting Spy Technology) boasting the latest gadgetry, the bright green InvestiGators Mango and Brash receive their newest assignment. The reptilian duo must go undercover at the Batter Down bakery to find missing mustachioed Chef Gustavo and his secret recipes. Before long, the pair find themselves embroiled in a strange and busy plot with a scientist chicken, a rabid were-helicopter, an escape-artist dinosaur, and radioactive cracker dough. Despite the great number of disparate threads, Green manages to tie up most neatly, leaving just enough intrigue for subsequent adventures. Nearly every panel has a joke, including puns (“gator done!”), poop jokes, and pop-culture references (eagle-eyed older readers will certainly pick up on the 1980s song references), promising to make even the most stone-faced readers dissolve into giggles. Green’s art is as vibrant as an overturned box of crayons and as highly spirited as a Saturday-morning cartoon. Fast pacing and imaginative plotting (smattered with an explosion here, a dance number there) propel the action through a whimsical world in which a diverse cast of humans live alongside anthropomorphized reptiles and dinosaurs. With its rampant good-natured goofiness and its unrelenting fizz and pep, this feels like a sugar rush manifested as a graphic novel.
