ANNO'S COUNTING BOOK

If Anno has previously functioned as the nursery Escher, he turns up here in the guise of a kindergartners' Grandma Moses. Still there is more ado in these charming primitivist landscapes than meets the careless eye. Numbered one through twelve in the right-hand margins, each double-page picture represents the same rural scene at a different hour of the day and month of the year, and in the left margin colored blocks stack up correspondingly (with a new column beginning at eleven). Within the picture a community grows--from one house, pine tree, leafy tree, child, adult, and animal to twelve of each; along the way more roads and bridges appear, activity steps up, groupings shift--and, best of all, Anno lets children discover it all for themselves, without a word of direction. However you add it up, it's a plus for your preschool collection.
