A diet of rubbish certainly agrees with Jacob's new pet lizard, Dippy; in a few months it grows to the size of a house, and attracts all sorts of unwelcome attention. Dippy, short for Diplodocus, understandably feels himself an anachronism in the modern world: ""The future is in computers, and I can't even hold a pencil."" With Jacob for company (and to buy the pizza he loves), he heads for the Canadian Rockies, with the army, famed professor Wacko Kilowatt, and Prime Minister Perry Pleaser in hot pursuit. After a climactic battle, Dippy disappears; later (despite a government disinformation campaign), Jacob learns that he has not only escaped but even found female companionship. Jacob hasn't seen so much trouble since he met The Hooded Fang (1975). Younger readers who miss the political satire will still feel Jacob's attachment to his dinosaurian friend.
