The Wolf's summer is a long, long, dry one, in spite of some contemporary Scottish scenery, love interest, and enough Scots idiom to clot a haggis. The Red Wolf whom everyone talks about -- unendingly -- is Ruarri Matheson, a rugged soldier of fortune who seems to have a burning fascinalion for all but the reader. The narrator, a writer who falls under the spell, is staying on one of Scotland's outer islands with a local laird who turns out to be the natural father of Ruarri. The Red Wolf never seems to do anything more significant than run some guns, poach some fish, and bed women after hunting, until the close when it's too late to arouse the reader from torpor induced by dull people saying duller things about the dullest subject. Foosh.
