CARROT CAKE

Hogrogian's little story of a domestic love quarrel employs some old faithful folk motifs--the stupid wife who teaches her husband a lesson and, in the same character, the Epaminondas type who persists in following the right procedure at the wrong time. But, for a further twist, Hogrogian makes her characters newlywed rabbits, sets their exchanges in a blooming meadow, and surrounds them with delicate flowered borders. (It's worth noting, though, how very like her humans are these streamlined rabbits with their coquettish sloping postures and their sly, demure smiles.) It's all very pretty--disarmingly so--but so much blushing sweetness, beginning with an ""elegant"" wedding (""Everyone said it was the finest match in the rabbit kingdom"") and capped daintily by two crossed carrots at the end, does tend to cloy. You might even find yourself longing for a Mr. MacGregor to dispel some of that lovely innocence.
