This volume in the Simply Small board-book series introduces Emma, a little hedgehog with a heart of gold.
Emma and her three sisters exhaust themselves trudging along after Daddy up a steep hill. Inspired by the sweet scent in the air, Emma picks flowers and hands one to each of her three wilting sisters. They each give her a kiss in return, as does her proud father, and that makes: “Three flowers, / four kisses, and / five hedgehogs / —happy at home.” This final spread shows the five critters resting all cuddled together in a contented clump, with Emma’s sisters still holding onto their precious flowers. The simple, uncluttered illustrations complement the sparse but apt text. The only things pictured are the hedgehogs, the hill and the flowers, all of which are drawn with very thick, bold outlines. The sky is rendered a soft pink, the hill a light green and the hedgehogs shades of tan, with the blue, white and yellow flowers adding a bit of variety to the palette.

A terrific resource for fans of Daniel Tiger and newcomers alike.
Animated PBS character Daniel Tiger helps readers tell time.
Mr. Rogers–like (explicitly—the show is produced by the Fred Rogers Co.), Daniel Tiger welcomes his neighbors, inviting them to spend the day with him and learn to use a clock along the way. A large clock face with movable hands is accessible through a large, die-cut circle in the upper-right corner of each double-page spread. The hands click and clack as they’re moved around the clock’s face, and the sound is peculiarly satisfying. Each hand has a different noise, helping children to differentiate between the two. Daniel and his family and friends do lots of things throughout the day, including eating breakfast, going to school, running errands, eating dinner, and going to bed. The illustrations emulate the show’s rounded, calmly colored style. Fans of the television show will be entranced. Daniel’s constant engagement with readers will spawn busy interaction, and the fact that this book covers a whole day makes it an excellent read right before bed.

Adults looking to engage little ones in early math concepts will not be disappointed.
A child uses a familiar standard to measure and compare the growth of a seed.
It is spring, and a child is in the garden planting a sunflower seed. Eventually, after adding dirt, water, sun, and time, the seed sprouts. Bit by bit the seed reaches toe height, then knees, waist, and shoulders. By summer, the plant is taller than the child and produces a giant sunflower. The backmatter explains that these types of experiences will help children understand measuring tools later on. A “Try This!” section offers a few suggestions to encourage further activities to help children grasp the concepts of size and measurement. Other books in the series are Circle! Sphere! (readers learn about shapes as a group of children blow bubbles); The Last Marshmallow (division and fractions are simply presented when two children with a cup of hot cocoa each must figure out how to share three marshmallows); and What Will Fit? (spatial sense is explored as a child at the farmers market decides what will fit best in the basket). All books have a brief explanation of the math concept presented and a concluding section with suggestions for further related activities. Multiaward-winning Lin presents the concepts in easy-to-understand short sentences paired with simple and attractive illustrations. The children depicted are Black and Asian.
