Though she is too young to begin ballet, Tanya loves to imitate her older sister, Elise, as she does her plies and arabesques; Tanya is especially good as a sad swan. On Elise's recital night, while even Grandma and Grandpa and the uncle who never smiles share the family's pride in Elise's performance, Tanya falls asleep; but afterwards, at home, she wakes just long enough to do a dance of her own that convinces her mother that it is time for her to have lessons, too. The plot here is familiar, but Gauch makes it seem new with carefully selected details that give her characters individuality. Ichikawa's delicately painted illustrations perfectly capture the clumsy grace of the appealing little dancer in both traditional and imaginatively new positions. A lovely book.
