He provides a state-by-state synopsis of the general ambiance toward longhairs; local laws and ordinances prohibiting or limiting where you may stand and signal; clothing (""think only of comfort""); canteens and crashing -- never crash in a public park (""If it is a big city you will be mugged, if it is a small city you will be busted""). Vermont and California are idyllic; Mississippi is the worst; New Jersey cops are hostile. You will eventually make it out of Iowa if stranded there. A special chapter for women has some reasonable tips on fending off sexual advances and a somewhat hedged recommendation to travel in pairs. Cheerful and practical suggestions for minimizing hassles while enjoying the romance of wayfaring on the open road: ""When in doubt consult your common sense.
