A P story expanded into a slim book -- a war story of sentimental mold, slight but well done. An ugly misshapen painter has healed an injured snow goose brought to him by a shy girl of the marshes. Each season the goose returns, each season their friendship ripens. Finally, the goose accompanies the painter to Dunkirk, where, with a selling vessel holding seven men, he does his part in the evacuation. The goose becomes a legend of safe escape -- and when he returns to the marshes, he is proof to the girl that her painter is dead.
