GETTING DRESSED

Sweet illustrations and efficient text deftly reinforce early learning concepts.

Young children select seasonally appropriate clothing in this lift-the-flap board book. With both written and illustrated context clues, readers are encouraged to predict what clothes the depicted children will wear. Each layout features several different pieces of clothing and accessories along with a flap on which a child looks out the window, ready to get dressed. The window scene gives clues about the weather outside, and beneath the flap, the fully clothed child enjoys the outdoors. Oud introduces weather, seasons, clothing, colors, and, perhaps most skillfully, she naturally encourages young readers to make predictions about the story. All of the seasons include specific text about each outdoor activity except for summer. This means that readers might think a dress, for example, is an appropriate choice until they see that Mika is swimming. Oud’s figures are boldly outlined in black with soft colors. The pale pastel palette ties each layout together into a cohesive whole, culminating in a group birthday party. Rafi’s walk through the rain shows movement in the splashed puddle droplets, his windblown hair, and a flick of his dog’s tail. There are lovely details in the print on the bathing suits and the plaid of the dress shirt. Each child is drawn with different colored skin, from Tom’s dark brown to Liv’s peach tones. Sweet illustrations and efficient text deftly reinforce early learning concepts. (Board book. 18 mos.-2)

100 FIRST WORDS

A handsome and sturdy resource for little ones beginning to build their vocabularies.

A bright and busy first picture dictionary.

As little ones flip through this large board book they’ll learn dozens of words relating to their daily lives. Each page is dedicated to a different, toddler-friendly subject: colors, toys, food, and more. Each subject is illustrated with five to 10 bright pictures, set into separate boxes with varying background colors. The images are a mixture of clear photographs and simple illustrations, and each object is legibly marked with lowercase text. The color scheme is suitably primary, emphasizing the building-block nature that these words have for a little one’s vocabulary. Readers just starting to talk will adore this colorful resource. The book is handsomely bound in a faux hardcover style that will make it seem big and important on a little one’s shelf.

LOOK OUTSIDE

From the Look & Learn series

A pleasant-enough exploration of the outside world.

Little ones learn about their environments.

Lots of different things can happen outside, and this board book provides a solid showcase. Each double-page spread depicts a different scene of people and places little readers might see outside. There are leaves blowing in the wind, clouds, snow, rain, and lots more. Basic descriptive text is positioned at the top of each scene, occasionally encouraging little ones to interact with it. After pointing out a brown-skinned mother-and-baby pair, the text suggests to readers, “Smile at the baby. Smile at her mommy.” The settings emphasize the pastoral, with spreading vistas of fields and forests rather than an urban environment. A concurrently published title, Big Cats, shows little readers lions, tigers, leopards, and other big cats. The formula is similar to Look Outside, employing keenly composed photographs of the cats and simple, straightforward text. While not an essential addition to a child’s bookshelf, these titles are smartly tuned to engage those with burgeoning curiosities in the respective fields.

A pleasant-enough exploration of the outside world. (Board book. 1-2)
