This true-to-life tale of Brida, a young Irish sorcerer’s apprentice whom Coelho met during a pilgrimage, was originally published in the author’s native Brazil shortly after his breakout work, The Alchemist (1988). Twenty-one-year-old Brida seeks out the Magus, a wizard exiled to a forest, to learn magic. The Magus immediately recognizes Brida as his Soul Mate, but since Brida is unschooled in the Tradition of the Moon, the feeling isn’t mutual. After an initial trial (an overnight stay, alone, in the Magus’ woods) proves her worthy, Brida’s path toward witchy enlightenment leads her to another teacher, Wicca, who guides Brida through the tarot and a series of trances, immersing her in the eclectic ragout of bromides that is spirituality according to Coelho. This benign rubric incorporates ancient Celtic pantheism (this is the only apparent reason for the setting, Ireland, because for all the local color the story could happen anywhere) but also the teachings of Saint Paul, Saint Augustine and Saint John of the Cross. The closest Wicca’s queens of the night get to wickedness is hand wringing over their misunderstood sisters who were burnt at the stake. These witches call upon the Virgin Mary to stand by whenever they invoke the power of the Serpent, and they eschew the ultimate sin of attempting to control humans. In fact, that very sin consigned the Magus to his sentence of loneliness: He used Black Magic to drive away his rival for a woman—not even his Soul Mate, just a brief fling. An intriguing episode featuring one of Brida’s past lives, during the persecution of the Cathar heretics, is all too brief.

A pleasingly dystopian exercise in building a world without social media—and without social graces, for that matter.
The past isn’t even past—but the one postmodern fictionalist Levin imagines is stranger than most.
Levin turns in a big, futuristic shaggy dog tale, except that the dog isn’t so shaggy. In fact, it’s a rather tidy, lovable little critter called a Curio, or “cure,” a sort of emotional support animal that lends itself to all kinds of bad treatment. In Levin’s future—or past, that is, since most of the action ranges between the early 1980s and the early 2010s—the technological advances we’ve become used to are absent: There are no iPhones, no internet, no Facebook. You’d think that such lacunae would make people feel happy, but instead strange forms of life have been concocted, with inanimate objects capable of feeling and voicing discontent and pain as well as acquiring some of the traits the humans around them possess. Levin’s hero in this overlong but amusing story is an alienated memoirist with the science-fictional name of Belt Magnet. But then, everyone in this story has an unusual moniker: Lotta Hogg, Jonboat Pellmore-Jason, Blackie Buxman, and so forth. His cure has the name Blank, “short for Kablankey, the name I’d given it, at my mother’s suggestion, for the sound of its sneeze.” By the end of the story, even though Blank is a mass-produced laboratory thing, the reader will care for him/it just as much as Belt does—and will certainly be shocked by the horrible things some of the characters do to the inanimate and lab-born things among them. Says a guy named Triple-J, brightly, “Let’s use those Band-Aids to Band-Aid a cure to the slide at the playground, throw some rocks at it from a distance, and see if something revolutionary develops—some new kind of Curio interaction that doesn’t end in overload, and that we never would have expected to enjoy.” If Levin’s point is that humans are rotten no matter what tools you put in their hands, he proves it again and again.

This novel about love, by a well-known Negro author, has received a good deal of advance publicity and will probably be widely read. Its subject is tormented love: love between men and women, homosexuals, whites and Negroes, shown through various shifting relationships in a group of friends. Rufus, a Negro boy, has a tragic affair with a Southern white girl; she ends in the madhouse, he becomes homosexual and kills himself. Vivaldo, an Irish-Italian, unsuccessful writer, who was fond of Rufus, begins a stormy affair with Rufus' sister, Ida. A white couple, Cass and Richard, start to break up when Richard becomes a successful writer and Cass has an affair with a homosexual, Eric, who loved Rufus, and is now in love with a French boy, Yves. All these people are hopelessly involved in each other, and with themselves, and search for love in each other generally in physical ways: at one point Vivaldo even has an affair with Eric. The ending is a tragic and inconclusive general dissolution in which truth destroys love. It is a curiously juvenile book for a man who has done so much writing. Neither the style nor the thought is particularly brilliant. Yet it has a certain emotional power. As the characters talk endlessly about their passion and the pain, they reveal a staggering collection of the less commonplace griefs of our time. And this relentless insistence, despite a certain banality and naivete, ends by conveying a honest and despairing conviction of reality.
