Solidly constructed story of plantation life in Virginia in the eighteenth century, made to order for all who are enthusiasts about the colonial period. Bacon's Rebellion is the focal point of the story, and the story has some of the quality of Raleigh's Eden, though not quite so full-bodied. Defense against Indians, Council discussions, outbreak of Revolution, all play their part as good Americans, background of a romance of Anne Branch and Jellis Holt. At times it seems a trifle old-fashioned, slow paced, but its scope is broad and it follows the pattern of substantial historical fiction. Should appeal particularly to Virginians.
