A foreword tells us that Harlequin's diamond-shaped costume was once depicted as a thing of irregular patches (but not who he was or where he originated or what people celebrated Carnival), and the story (""based on an outline found in Larousse's Dictionnaire Universel du XIX Siecle, 1865"") tells how he acquired the suit. His friends, moved by Harlequin's sadness because his mother is too poor to buy material for a Carnival costume, all cut off and donate small pieces from their own outfits. ""And Harlequin was the happiest of them all on this happy night, for he was clothed in the love of his friends."" Charlip's dreamy pictures of an old (Italian?) town have a muted glow to match the soft-focus sentimentality of the tale.
