Posthsmously published, this last novel traces the vagabond days of young Dick Banning, who leaves home to take up a life of chance an Ronnie Le Grand and becomes a gambler on the Mississippi river. The victim of a New Orleans Madame Rondo, who had failed to seduce him, his soritic into the underworld in brought to a stop and he assumes his own name, but finds that his notoriety impedes his marriage to the girl he loves. Travelling on to Texas, Dick joins a circus, is successful, marries a performer who inherits a fortune, but finds that his marriage is by the poltergeist (olfactory) of Madame Rondo whose , perfume invades his nights of love. Leaving his wife, Dick goes West, and again meets Mavis but. In afraid to court her.
