OUR HOME IS THE SEA

In Hong Kong on the last day of school, a boy hurries through the city--running down the steep hill, riding a tram, looking at people, marketplace, and high-rise apartments, visiting a park and coming at last to his houseboat home. He doesn't want his mother to see his report card: it is too good; and though it gives her hope that he will become a teacher, he plans to be a fisherman like his father and grandfather before him--a plan in which his father concurs. This quiet story serves lo caption a series of serene, carefully observed paintings in somber, well-balanced colors ranging from earth tones to peach and gold--paintings of almost more interest for their design and the patterns derived from the scenes than for the scenes themselves. This is Luzak's first book; it will be interesting to see how else he'll use his considerable talent.
