SADIE SHAPIRO'S KNITTING BOOK

This one's too cute and whimsical for words -- and there's plenty of them from elderly jogger/ homely philosopher/ knitter extraordinary Sadie Shapiro, noisy resident of the Mount Eden Senior Citizens Hotel. Editor Marion Wall is burdened with the handling of Sadie's knitting book, purchased on impulse by Harbor Press. And-weh! -- problems, all overcome by Sadie, who marshalls the Mount Eden crowd to knit up a storm to meet a production schedule; gets the book off the ground and into the realms of Geld via the Johnny Carson show where she wows 'em; and straightens out Marion's love life and her own and Marion's daughter's weight problem. There are some bright moments at the beginning concerning Mount Eden, but Sadie's hard to take. Her patter, which jabs away like a #1 needle gone amok, ranges from Totie Fields (""Listen, who else is going to take care of your body if you don't? Rockefeller?"") to Dr. Franzblau (""I think it's a little previous to start talking about resigning, and not talking to each other""). Pureed schmaltz.
