by Robert Ludlum ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 4, 1976
Another of Ludlum's rock-hard cliffhangers designed to knock the wind out of any reader, this one begins in 1939, traveling up to the near present, via Greece, Italy, and the U.S.A. Padrone Savarone of the Fontini-Cristi Industries hands down to his eldest son Vittorio, later Victor, the cryptogram to a vault with its documents hidden for fourteen centuries, much more important than The Matlock Paper, ""staggering to the civilized world"" and bound to overturn countries, churches and the faith of faiths. Others are also anxious to get the papers, from British Intelligence to a Greek monk of a little-known order until the legacy, or rather responsibility, devolves upon Victor's twin sons, Andrew and Adrian, one strong, one weak, and both headed toward a one-to-one final encounter. Ludlum is a sure sell which means that this too will travel up, up, up in terms of that flypaper readership.
