THE MONKEY AND THE TIGER

Judge Dee, that 7th Century Chinese magistrate whose eminent tactical work in detection might have earned him a place in Mao's oabinet, is back, this time with two complicated cases. In The Monkey a gibbon presents a ring that eventually rounds up a band of vagabonds, breaks up a group of smugglers and uncovers a murder. It's the year of The Tiger when the Judge is trapped by the elements and by cutthroats known as the Flying Tigers and isolated in a country house along with fifty other refugees. He also finds himself chasing a ghost as well as a murderer and hunting down some mysteriously missing pieces of gold. The Judge maintains his Oriental calm through all the Chinese fireworks and he has the kind of kimono mind that a special audience has liked.
