Petticoats swirl and early Victorian cheeks go pink with pique as the suddenly orphaned and homeless Marlow giris--Tansy, Nina, and lame foster-sister Judith--attempt to start a new life in Cudlingham, where their wastrel father left them a house, a horse, and his uppity mistress, Amelia. For respectability's sake, they must all pretend that they're rich and that Amelia is Aunt Amelia, at least until sensual, selfish Nina snares the most eligible bachelor in town. So Tansy secretly slaves as a peddler; she's determined to pay off her father's debts to demonic Dominic Reade, who may be the scoundrel behind the crooked practices at the Derby but who may also be the man for Tansy. Races, balls, teas, and selfsacrifices-spiced with decorous sin and violence and so labored as to obscure the nice touches of there and then.
