Return engagement of an established charmer, ingenuous, illogical, ingratiating Claudia whose experiences have universal appeal. There is less levity this time, as 1941 brings mounting disasters. David has money worries, and Claudia tries to alleviate them by astrology; the children get flu; the house catches fire; Claudia proves to be a coward about caterpillars but a heroine when faced with a real emergency. Major trouble comes, however, when David enlists after Pearl Harbor, and Claudia has a miscarriage. Only David's overseas' orders make her come back to facing bigger issues with her old spirit. Familiar fiscos, fallibilities et al transposed with dexterity and a captivating sense of people and situation.
