EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE

Revised to conform to post-Sputnik observations, this now includes more precise characterizations of galaxies, specific mention of both Bessel and parallax and Shapley and RR Lyrae, expanded entries on ""Visitors from Outer Space"" (asteroids, meteorite showers, etc.) and a brief consideration of quasars. Some necessary corrections (e.g. the Mizar as an optical binary) have been made, and there is the about-face suggestion to think of constellations as straight lines rather than mythological figures. Several of the illustrations have been improved, especially photographs of nebulae, although the Constellation Chart has been relegated to the front end papers. Minor style changes contribute to the newer sound.
