LOOK UP

From the Look & Learn series

A solid introduction to things seen above.

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! A plane! And lots of other things!

This board book explores everything the sky has to offer. From kites to bubbles to rainbows, the atmosphere holds many lovely things, and little readers will get to know many of them with this simple read. At the start of each section, little ones are told to “Look up!” and spot each individual object in the sky. Once it’s been identified, the text gives small supporting details in the following double-page spread (“The wind blows the kite in the air”; “A bubble is round”) before moving on to another aerial object. The pictures are bright and keenly composed, using National Geographic’s trademark straightforward style. The children depicted are all light-skinned. Companion title Peek-a-boo is published concurrently and uses the same narrative structure to introduce little readers to creatures living in the wild. Both books are simple but effective.

A solid introduction to things seen above. (Board book. 1-3)

ELEPHANTS SPRAY

From the Amazing Changing Pictures series

Little animal lovers will enjoy gazing at the photographs while learning a little bit about these creatures' real lives and...

This brief photographic nonfiction offering introduces little ones to the many uses of an elephant’s trunk.

An elephant’s strong trunk can do many amazing things, including smelling, carrying food to its mouth, drinking, spraying water, and hugging friends. The stock photos used to illustrate these actions, while they vary in quality from the ordinary to the striking, will in all likelihood succeed in catching the attention of curious toddlers and preschoolers. A light pink column occupies the right- or left-hand border of each double-page spread, displaying the text in white print, a color choice that doesn’t provide enough contrast with the background for easy reading. The syntax and vocabulary, though, are kept simple and appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers: “Sniff, sniff! He smells food,” for example, and “Munch, munch! Here’s a tasty lunch.” Other, very similar titles in the series include Monkeys Swing, Giraffes Stretch, Penguins Waddle, Lions Roar, and Dolphins Play. All of them feature photographic images and simple text that showcase the animals in action.

Little animal lovers will enjoy gazing at the photographs while learning a little bit about these creatures' real lives and behaviors. (Board book. 2-3)

READY FOR WEATHER

From the ROYGBaby series

A plainspoken and effective introduction to the spectrum of weather patterns, with color identification as a bonus.

Little readers learn the value of dressing properly for various weather conditions.

When it’s “HOT” outside, we wear bathing suits, sun hats, sandals, and sunscreen. When it’s “RAINY,” we wear raincoats, overalls, and rain boots. Our wardrobe’s reaction to the weather is important, and this board book is dedicated to making sure little ones are prepared. Each turn of the page features a weather scene on the left page and all the clothing and accessories one would wear in these conditions on the right. Each weather scene is given a prominent color scheme: “SUNNY” is green, “STORMY” is purple, and so forth. All the clothing is labeled in simple black text on a white background. The final pages of the book depict three children, two brown and one white, playing under a rainbow in appropriate clothing. Jones’ illustrations are charming yet understated, plainly presenting the articles of clothing but rendering her weather scenes with artistic flourish—the smiling animals in each will charm readers on second and third visits, especially the reflection of the gray cat looking out the window at the stormy night.

A plainspoken and effective introduction to the spectrum of weather patterns, with color identification as a bonus. (Board book. 1-2)
