WAPITI THE ELK

As a departure from Montgomery's former ranch life stories-here is a fine report on the life of an elk, written with the eye of a true naturalist and adorned with enough plot and authentic emotion to make it more than a scientific account. Wapiti is met at birth and within the first two days suffers attack from a bear and a bobcat. The world of northern pines and meadows takes on color and life as Wapiti spends his first summer with the herd, tenderly nurses new antlers, is in captivity for a winter with a local hunter and nearly starves, fights disastrously with another bull and finally, in his third year is prepared to roar challenge to the world and lead his own band. Compare this with Walt Disney's recent movie about the elk for market appeal.
