An effective and silly page-turner.
The Sago Mini characters create robots.
Dr. Harvey, a brown dog with glasses, is making some new robots, and little readers are invited to help. Five robots are presented, one per double-page spread, but each page is cut into three horizontal flaps, allowing for a mix-and-match effect that will surely amuse. The pages facing the robot illustration offer descriptive text, so readers can make a Sad Fire-Fighter Dance-Bot or a Sleepy Superhero Skate-Bot or even a Happy Chef Exercise-Bot. Dr. Harvey is the only Sago character that makes an appearance, so familiarity with the popular app is unnecessary. Little ones getting used to manipulating pages will enjoy flipping and mixing up the curvy and colorful illustrations. The pages are sturdily bound and hold up to frantic play. While there is no narrative to speak of, the book is well-suited for car rides and group reads.

Great for a birthday read and enjoyable all year long.
A little one grabs a pair of shutter shades and gets a major groove on.
"Who loves to party?" The board book kicks off with this question, and each page follows with a different animal enjoying a wild time in increasingly silly ways. Lemurs hang streamers, pheasants wrap presents, and the mole rat wears his party hat. The titular baby makes a grand entrance on the second to last page, answering the original question and taking this party to a whole new level. The rhythmic, internally rhyming lines encourage a thumping beat for little ones to clap or stomp along with. Young readers will delight at all the animals and the funky colors, and adults will snicker at the contemporary quirks of the party. More board books should have parakeets dropping beats and ocelots that rock a lot. Electric colors and busy compositions make for an appropriately frenetic accompaniment.

As warm as a hug from Grandma.
Grandma is the star in dozens of picture books for older children, but seldom is the special bond between a toddler and their grandmother portrayed in a book for very young children.
This sweet, but not saccharine, board book fills that gap. Thankfully, this grandma does not have Alzheimer’s and is not dying. She simply delights in spending time with her cherished grandchild. The narrator, a charming bear cub, is not identified as male or female, which makes it easy for both girls and boys to insert themselves in the story. Each of the six rhyming couplets is spread across double-page spreads: “I love the fun we have each day, / And all the funny things you say.” Even in its small board-book trim size, there is still plenty of room for the winsome watercolors to highlight the familiar yet memorable rituals of a day spent with a loving and patient grandma. Note: “Rory Tyger” is the collective pseudonym for the British artistic team of Richard Greaves, Tracey Simmons, and Gabrielle Murphy. Their illustrations were originally used in Good Night, Sleep Tight by Claire Freedman (2003). In that story, the little bear is resisting bedtime. This reworking is a gentle and conflict-free ode to the special love between little bear and a doting grandma.
