This has been publicized widely as the Helsingfors Prize Novel, written by a young woman who, a year ago, was working as a domestic in New England. It was a good news story -- how she used five and ten cent store scratch pads and wrote on her days off and after hours, and how she submitted the novel to the contest and won the 50,000 marks award. I was almost afraid to read it and face disappointment. But -- having read it -- I can join the cheerers in the various countries where the book has appeared. It is an amazing piece of work, and has lost nothing in the translation from the Swedish. A poignant story of the Aland Islands, which recalls the rare quality of Twenty Years A-Growing with the added interest of a simple story, told with heartfelt sincerity, of a woman who takes on richness and reality as the years unfold. Sell to those who liked Men of Aran, the above mentioned Twenty Years A-- Growing, etc.
