THE FOURTH DIMENSION IS DEATH

Rich, bi-coastal actor Sam Holt, star of the now-defunct TV series Packard, has several, ever-escalating run-ins with his doppelganger, actor Dale Wormley, who is suing him for depriving him of a livelihood (Holt has put a stop to his impersonating him in commercials). So, naturally, when Dale's bludgeoned to death outside his New York townhouse, Sam becomes murder suspect #1. Dale's girl-thinks he did it; so does Dale's mother. To clear his reputation, Holt does what he hasn't done in a long time: act. He becomes doppleganger to the doppleganger, and his ""disguise"" fools most of Dale's acquaintances: his agent, acting partners, the aging female star with whom he may have been having an affair. Then one final twist leads to the full explanation for Dale's murder: his attempts at blackmail, which his victim's bought-and-paid-for hireling tried to stop. The audition preparations are droll and amusing, as is the basic premise--the have and the have-not twin sendup. But while this is as breezy, nonchalant, and readable as its predecessors, those two brainy girlfriends on either coast are beginning to pall, and Holt is too slick an actor to be out of work this long.
