The fine, sensitive illustrations by a Caldecott winner constitute a perfect complement for one of Sarah Orne Jewett's stories. Sylvia, a child of the woods, is tormented when she meets a kind ornithologist. But, in the end, she is loyal to her woodland friends, and watches sadly as the man departs -- without a white heron. The picturesque writing of the late author linked with Barbara Cooney's talent form a book which will interest children of the listening audience.
