THE THIRD STATUE

A second (Twelve Girls in the Garden) story in an old Grecian setting has many modern points of interest and intrigue and concerns the search for the discredited archaeologist Grosteller, a fantastic figure, brilliant, slovenly, suspicious, whom some stillbelieved to be alive. A pair of earrings revives this possibility for Professor Ronald Challis, who had once known him; and there are others equally determined to find him:- Ethel Ordway, an American woman, who had loved him; Venny, his unacknowledged daughter; Johnny Franz, a dealer in antiquities- Grosteller's; Vivaldo, the partner he would not hesitate to kill. Murder attends the attempts to reach Grosteller- and the cave where Phidias had left a priceless legacy, and as the many members most concerned converge there- Grosteller vanishes, but ends a legend which has led to violence.... An atmospheric and decorative diversion.
