THE MARK OF CONTE

When the high school computer registers Conte Mark twice--once under his right name and once as Mark Conte--our hero decides to carry both programs and graduate in half the time. Through a combination of fast footwork and independent study programs the scheme almost does work; in fact, after Conte decides that he can get more out of school as one person, he's left with a spare diploma which is awarded to his Great Dane at graduation. All this is less daring than it seems when you consider that, in the same school, another group of students has installed a dummy to teach algebra and arranged to collect her salary. . . or that the ultimate administration is in the hands of Charlotta, who got to be band manager by being ""generous"" to the members, and has now reformed in favor of more devious ways of avoiding classes and grades altogether. Basically garbage in/garbage out humor, but Conte's frantic machinations do rate a passing mark as ephemeral entertainment.
