LIONEL AT LARGE

Five cheerful easy-to-read stories about Lionel and his family, his friend, and his adventures. In ""Vegetables,"" Lionel announces that though his stomach is equipped with a hamburger shelf and a bread shelf, it has no vegetable shelf. His parents take a hard line: no green beans, no dessert. He finds his vegetable shelf just in time. ""At the Doctor's,"" he gets a shot painlessly while the doctor is only ""aiming."" In ""The Snake,"" Lionel's sister Louise loses her pet snake in Lionel's room. These stories are simply told and, while not unusually original or charming, their calm and humor will please most children. The illustrations are friendly and bright, but the cartoon-like faces seem out of keeping with the detail evident in the rest of the drawing.
