De Paola's toy-like, sculptural figures and his conventionalized, spun-sugar landscapes do have a certain Near Eastern look--and his pinky-red, floret-centered star, trailing streamers in a mottled white sky, is certainly different. So, for that matter, are Mary and the Babe as the three kings find them: seated, Byzantine-painting-like, on a throne, with no signs of the manger present at all. Pictorial novelty is the book's one yes-and-no attraction; there is almost no expression, or expressiveness.
