Texan Jody, 16, has only been married to Bobby James for 13 weeks when he punches her out and leaves her at a gas station in Florida in 1991. Readers learn this when Jody begins a missive to a supermarket owner, to set him straight on the subject of coleslaw. Jody has gumption, though, and enough smarts to know a few things. She gets a job as dishwasher at Thelma’s café and sleeps in the local movie theatre until she can get a place. She makes the acquaintance of Dooley, a mentally disabled boy, and, later, the pregnant and sullen Effaline. It’s Effaline who brings out the urge to make things right in Jody. She finds the local library, writes her mama, and moves into the same seedy apartment complex where Effaline lives. It’s Jody and Dooley who deliver Effaline’s baby (aptly named Cine) in that movie theatre during a hurricane, and it’s Cine’s birth they are celebrating when Bobby James turns up just like a bad penny. This is all presented in Jody’s unvarnished and very funny voice. A fast read where problems can actually be solved by facing them head-on, thinking stuff through, and working hard. (Fiction. YA)

A heavy read about the harsh realities of tragedy and their effects on those left behind.
In this companion novel to 2013’s If He Had Been With Me, three characters tell their sides of the story.
Finn’s narrative starts three days before his death. He explores the progress of his unrequited love for best friend Autumn up until the day he finally expresses his feelings. Finn’s story ends with his tragic death, which leaves his close friends devastated, unmoored, and uncertain how to go on. Jack’s section follows, offering a heartbreaking look at what it’s like to live with grief. Jack works to overcome the anger he feels toward Sylvie, the girlfriend Finn was breaking up with when he died, and Autumn, the girl he was preparing to build his life around (but whom Jack believed wasn’t good enough for Finn). But when Jack sees how Autumn’s grief matches his own, it changes their understanding of one another. Autumn’s chapters trace her life without Finn as readers follow her struggles with mental health and balancing love and loss. Those who have read the earlier book will better connect with and feel for these characters, particularly since they’ll have a more well-rounded impression of Finn. The pain and anger is well written, and the novel highlights the most troublesome aspects of young adulthood: overconfidence sprinkled with heavy insecurities, fear-fueled decisions, bad communication, and brash judgments. A strong young woman discovers love where she least expects it.
At 17, Madeline Fisher-Michaels’ only love has been field hockey. With her focus on playing in college, boys have never been a priority. But after she agrees to be a bridesmaid in her brother Austin’s wedding to his fiancée, Katie, everything changes. She allows Katie—whom she doesn’t like but hopes to bond with—and the other bridesmaids to be her matchmakers. Mads navigates complicated, changing feelings toward longtime best friend Connor McCallister and classmate Marco Álvarez, whom she banters and bickers with. With the support of her dads, Mads must work through shifting relationships with family, boys, and even herself. Mads proves to be a strong protagonist: She often speaks her mind and maintains clear boundaries throughout the novel, which is refreshing. She communicates well with her family and serves as an inspirational role model for young women navigating relationships. The complexity of Katie’s characterization is another highlight; her depth and growth balance the lack of substance in the portrayals of other supporting characters. Readers looking for drama and intrigue may be disappointed, but Walther’s strong young women characters truly shine in this quietly entertaining, character-driven tale. Marco is cued Latine in the otherwise largely white cast.
