OPERATION BLUE BEAR: A True Story

When Jim Jensen, a conservationally-inclined technician at the Coast Guard station at Yakutat, Alaska, realized that the bear which had lately been raiding the station's garbage was one of the rare and endangered Glacier dr ""Blue"" Bears, he began to worry about its future. Because hunting season was in full swing, it seemed unlikely that the bear would survive amidst the trophy hunters who were already anxious to have its hide. The Coast Guard was unable to guarantee its safety, so Jensen contacted the San Diego Zoo in the hope that they might, in the short time remaining before the bear was likely to leave the station in search for a place to hibernate, be able to capture and preserve him. The author's attempts to heighten the drama, first by creating a scenario of the young bear from his home and the wanderings which eventually led him to Yakutat, and later by recreating dialogue among the people concerned with the bear, detract. However, this true story of a member of an endangered species and the obstacles--both physical and bureaucratic--surmounted in the attempt to save it, should interest young wildlife lovers.
