This is supposed to be very funny, but it misses fire (with one reader anyhow). An over-expanded play on the difficulties of Professor John Jones, who discovers that he has a lethal power which he determines to offer the government in the war. It is his odyssey of travail as he goes from channel to channel, trying to reach the President, the heads of the Services, of all law making bodies, and so on. Curricular troubles follow when his activities create dangers for him at St. Jude's Theological Seminary in Maryland. Interplay of governmental and military blind alleys-FBI espionage- campus gossip -- small romantic interest, all are explored in such exhaustive detail that the often funny incidental episodes are overwhelmed. The author knows his departmental routine -- but his story is no second Mr. Adam.
