THE TASHKENT CRISIS

The political specifics may be a bit muddled, but this Failsafe operation concerning a U.S.-U.S.S.R. doomsday escalation offers timeclock suspense in both military outposts and conference rooms. The Russians, under a new hellfire leadership, announce their readiness to use an ultimate laser weapon which U.S. Intelligence has traced to the Tashkent region. The American President approves action on two fronts -- a suicide mission to dismantle the weapon and an explosion which will evacuate Washington. Eventually the spies find a traitor in their band and are captured. Some Russian second thoughts, a well-placed device at Tashkent and the deposition of the Premier resolve the crisis. Typecast but respectable.
