A GHOST AROUND THE HOUSE

Malcolm MacDhu, pupil of Hogarth and Watteau? But then, as Jasper reminds his father, ""It's no harder to believe in a two hundred and fifty year old ghost who paints than in a two hundred and fifty year old ghost who doesn't paint."" And Mr. Trimble, suddenly garnering first prizes thanks to Malcolm's ethereal touch, believes and becomes disconsolate: ""Pop, no less than Malcolm MacDhu, had his pride."" He owns up, disowns the work as it were, revealing to Malcolm his own vanity that would--and once did--play false; repentance at last brings him rest. Borne lightly on wisecracks and asides that read like radio comedy (Malcolm could be Jack Benny with a brogue), a quick tease that kids should take to.
