MALKIN'S, MOUNTAIN

Since the wicked Malkin (banished for his evil deeds in The Three Toymakers, 1971) can't go to the Mountain, he moves the Mountain to him -- manipulating its internal clockworks and setting an army of animated toy soldiers to guard the operation. To save the wooded slopes on which depend the livelihood of the artisans of Drussl, Rudi Toymaker, his nephew Anders and twin sons Peter and Peterkin must pursue their enemy into his underground kingdom, and the fate of the village soon hinges on whether the clock will run out before the imprisoned Rudi can fashion a new gold key to reverse the process. The lifelike dolls and their Bavarian creators make charmingly hand-crafted fairytale protagonists, but it takes a leap of faith to accept their intricately plotted earth-moving activities, suggesting that the Toymaker's previously convinced customers will constitute the most ready audience.
