TO GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE WE GO

In another of Roberts' taut suspense tales, three children run away to a grandmother they've never met and discover a frightening family secret. Kevin (11), Rosie (10), and Nathan (8) face separation in foster care after their widowed mother has a stroke. Their only hope seems to be the grandmother who, years ago, gave away their mother and aunt for reasons unknown. With luck and ingenuity, the three travel from Illinois to the grandmother's rural Kansas address, where they find a burnt-out farm and little welcome from either their grandmother or a great-uncle. Then they detect the presence of a mysterious third person--whose identity will reveal the reason for the long-ago abandonment. The denouement, involving pyromania, is saved from sensationalism by Roberts' logical preparation and by the believability of her young protagonists. The writing may not be distinguished here, but this is a genuine page-turner.
